Jungle Antenna Part 1

The Jungle Antenna For the last several weeks you've heard me talk about a mysterious antenna known as the, "Jungle Antenna".  The Jungle Antenna gets its name from its use during WWI, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War as it was used as a, "Field Expedient Antenna" for Radio Operators.  Radio Operators recognized there was no one size fits all antenna once you get to the field so they learned how to build their own antennas based on the frequency they were going to be using.  How?  If you watched this week's video, you heard me mention the number, "936". 936 is the number we use to calculate the length of our antenna to make it resonant for the frequency we intend to operate on, based upon a full wavelength.  For today's blog, we will be talking about 2 meters, or specifically, 146.520.  So the first thing you will want to do is divide 936 by 4 since we are wanting a quarter-wave antenna which gives us a number of 234.  Now that we know w...

Formulating Your Comms Plan Using FRS

Hello to all my loyal viewers and readers!  Today's post takes us into the realm of formulating our comms plan and actually writing this plan down on paper.  If you are just now coming to us, I would like to ask you to take a few minutes to visit our YouTube channel  Tactical Comms  , start with the oldest video, and then you will have a decent understanding of what you need to know in order to build your Plan.  Before we get started, remember a few things; Who do you want to talk to? Where are they in relation to you? What technology is available to you? Also, I want you to remember this acronym which is applicable to more than Comms, "P.A.C.E."; P- Primary A- Alternate C- Contingent E- Emergency We will not talk a lot about PACE in today's Blog, but will begin to talk more about it as we begin building your tool-box of tricks to solve Comms problems.  I only want to keep reminding you of a few basic terms with each video or blog I give y...

How to get Started with Tactical Comms

Communications can be mysterious and overwhelming at times.  Especially when you watch TV and movies and their comms always works.  Unfortunately, comms in the real world can fail for many reasons.  This is why I have decided to start at the basics and keep the videos short.  In today's YouTube, I talked about a few resources available for you to begin your journey through the mysterious realm of communications. I started you off learning to take the Technician Class Exam which is the first step of earning your Amateur (Ham) Radio License.  Communications is so much more than radios; it is a system of things, tools, and capabilities.  Your radio is useless without an antenna, a charged battery, or the knowledge of the proper frequency to operate on. Websites such as www.arrl.org , www.qrz.com, and www.amrron.com are all good resources to begin your journey.  Between now and the next video, think about something you would like to know and post it in...
